the building: The Church of St. Nicolas can be regarded as the oldest of the three medieval parish churches in Stralsund. It is a triple-nave basilica with an 87 metre ambulatory. It was first mentioned in the city chronicle in 1276. The mighty double tower, however, was only added in the 14th century. The polygonal spires that once crowned the towers fell victim to a devastating fire in 1662. Today a Baroque domical roof still tops the south tower, while the north tower has retained its flat roof. In the centuries that followed, the copper roof and sections of the masonry were renewed. Since 1980 work has been in progress on the entire building to restore the original medieval state. The interior of the church is rich and colourful. Some of the 56 original altars have been preserved, including the Gothic high altar, the Baroque altar in the middle of the church designed by Andreas Schlüter, and the 1611 pulpit. The Bergen Navigators’ Altar, the Ahus and Novgorod pews bear witness to the flourishing maritime trade during the Hanseatic period. The astronomic clock is one of the few of this type to survive.
